Dr. Belle S. Wheelan
President, Commission on Colleges of the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Bio:
Dr. Wheelan’s 35 year career in higher education has included roles from faculty to provost, from college president to the Secretary of Education for the State of Virginia. Her unique history gives her a special insight into higher education and the proper role of assessment in its future.

First Plenary Session Abstract:
This session will focus on the role of assessment in the accreditation process and the importance of using data to explain to the general public why higher education is significant. Additionally, examples of assessment strategies used by various institutions will be shared.

SACSCOC Town Hall Meeting (lunch provided):
The SACSCOC Town Hall Meeting (lunch provided) will feature Dr. Belle Wheelan, President of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and will discuss the 5th Year Interim Report, a report required by SACSCOC between each decennial reaffirmation review.  She will highlight the purpose of the report, explain its context, and elaborate on its requirements and expectations.  She will also discuss the review process.

Dr. Clifford Adelman
Senior Associate with the Institute for Higher Education Policy

Bio:
Spending 30 years working for the United States Department of Education, Dr. Adelman has become a driving force in assessment and education policy. In his role at IHEP, Dr Adelman has most recently become a voice for America’s version of the Bologna Process, Tuning USA.

Second Plenary Session Abstract:
We’re going to walk down the Bologna Process road, with particular attention to Tuning, to our exploratory 2009 “Tuning USA” project in three state systems, to problems Tuning encounters with operational learning outcomes (LO) statements, to the paths from Tuning to degree Qualifications Frameworks.  We’re looking at a generation’s worth of work, not to copy, but to join what is recognized as a global convergence.
